What are the most common engineering unit slips?
The usual suspects are per hour against per second, power against energy, higher against lower heating value, a temperature difference converted like a temperature, and gauge against absolute pressure. Each one produces a plausible number, so it passes a quick look and only fails a careful one.
- Per hour against per second: a factor of 3,600 hides inside every flow rate.
- Power against energy: kW is a rate, kWh is an amount. A 5 kW heater running for 3 hours uses 15 kWh.
- Heating value basis: natural gas higher heating value is roughly 10 percent above its lower heating value.
- Temperature differences: a 10 degree Celsius rise is an 18 degree Fahrenheit rise, not 50.
- Pressure basis: gauge pressure plus about 14.7 psi is absolute pressure.
- Thermal against electrical: one kWh of heat is not one kWh of electricity.
How do I convert pounds per hour to kilograms per second?
Multiply pounds by 0.45359237 to get kilograms, then divide by 3,600 to turn hours into seconds. For 2,000 lb/h that gives 907.18 kilograms per hour, or 0.252 kilograms per second. Write the units next to every cell so a skipped step shows up immediately.
- Convert mass: 2,000 lb × 0.45359237 kg/lb = 907.18 kg.
- Convert time: 907.18 kg/h ÷ 3,600 s/h = 0.252 kg/s.
- Carry the result into Q = m × Δh and make sure the answer lands in kilowatts.
How does Elta help with units while I work?
Ask Elta to say the units and assumptions beside each step, including whether a gas value uses a higher or lower heating value. Because it sees your sheet or page as you talk, you can check a conversion factor in seconds instead of hunting through a handbook for it.
Share the sheet or the page you are working from and ask Elta to talk through the units on every line. It tells you each conversion factor it used, so you can see the factor as well as the answer.
Can I use Elta for a quick one-off conversion?
Yes. Say or type the value and its units and ask for the conversion, and Elta answers out loud along with the factor it used. For something bigger, share the relevant cells or page and ask it to look for units that do not line up across the whole calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Elta convert units as well as spot problems with them?
Both. Elta can convert between common engineering units and explain the factors it used, and it can point out places in your work where the units do not line up.
Will Elta ask about heating value basis?
You can ask it to. Tell Elta whether your source uses a higher or lower heating value and it will carry that through, or ask it which one your numbers seem to assume.
Can I use it to check a single number?
Yes. Say or type the value and its units and ask for the conversion factors and assumptions. For a spreadsheet, share the relevant cells and Elta works from what it can see.
Does it work with imperial and metric together?
Yes. Mixed unit systems are exactly where slips happen, so Elta is happy to talk through pounds, kilograms, psi, kilopascals, Fahrenheit and Celsius side by side.
What can Elta see?
Only what you choose to share: a screen, a window, a tab or an image. You can stop sharing or end a session whenever you like.
Is Elta free to try?
Yes. The Free plan includes Elta and the Voice Agent with 100,000 tokens a day, and no credit card is needed. Upgrade to Plus or Pro whenever you want more room.
